Invisible Networks: panel + networking event

City Central, together with Make it in the North, will host a series of panels and networking events in September at the Remonstrantse Kerk about how finding work in the Netherlands really works.

This special panel series - which is intended for job seekers and employers alike - will reveal the “invisible” professional networks and open secrets of the informal ways to get a job in the Netherlands. This event will also serve as a networking opportunity with a chance to meet local employers.

Many careers start in The Netherlands via via, where job seekers learn about opportunities from their personal social networks. Casual conversations (in Dutch) over a borrel or cup of coffee can translate into getting your foot in the proverbial professional door. At the (often separate) alumni events Dutch and international grads, and within the walls of student associations founded along historic religious lines, it’s possible to secure a job without a vacancy ever being posted publicly.

What can Dutch companies and recruiters do to be more aware of, and improve access to, these informal networks for internationals and bicultural Dutch citizens? And how can job seekers of color crack the code behind these invisible networks?

Our panel of experts from the RUG, Hanze and Noorderlink will discuss how Dutch networking really works, how it developed, the role of alumni events, verenigingen, and how gezelligheid can actually be more of a barrier rather than an invitation. We’ll also hear directly from recent and soon-to-be university international graduates, as well as first/second generation Dutch people of color, about their experiences with job hunting and professional networking in The Netherlands.

An English discussion and networking event on this topic will be held on the 20th of September, and a Dutch discussion will take place on the 27th of September. Both events will take place from 19:00 to 22:00 at the Remonstrantse Kerk (Coehoornsingel 14). Tickets to both events are €5 and available now through City Central’s Eventbrite page. Please note: the CoronaCheck app will be required for entrance to this event.

The panel discussions will be followed by a networking session featuring regional employers, and will be coordinated by Make it in the North, the online platform for bringing together international job seekers and employers in the north.
